David Goldstein Memorial Scholarship for Criminal Law Students
The David Goldstein Memorial Scholarship was established by his family in honor of our long-time criminal law teacher. David taught Criminal Law in our Paralegal Studies program for 30 years and was a strong advocate for social justice in criminal law.

The scholarship is open to admitted SF State Paralegal Studies certificate students planning a career in criminal law. We will award two $3,000 scholarships this semester.
The criteria for applying is as follows:
- Students must be admitted certificate students with a 3.5 GPA in Paralegal Studies courses.
- Students must have completed at least one semester in the program.
- Students must have at least one more semester left in the program after the semester in which they apply for the scholarship.
- Students must have taken or be enrolled in our Paralegal Studies Criminal Law class and/or completed an internship or volunteer work in criminal law.
- International students are encouraged to apply.
- Students must write an essay detailing their career plans for working as a paralegal or going on to law school to continue to work for social justice in criminal law. See Essay Guidelines below.

- The essay should be 2 - 3 pages typed in 12 point and double spaced.
- You do not need to include legal research. It should be a personal statement.
- International students are encouraged to focus their essay on the differences in the criminal law system in their home county and here in the U.S. discussing challenges faced in working for social justice.
- Students must also self-describe financial need and how this scholarship will help them complete the Paralegal Studies certificate.
Students will be scored on the following items:
- Essay
- Writing skills
- Career and educational goals (in fitting with David Goldstein’s viewpoint)
- Financial need
- Education, work experience or/and community service
Essays will be judged by a committee of Paralegal Studies faculty.
