What to Wear in San Francisco

Weather in San Francisco is often cooler than Southern California. Be sure to dress in layers. Also make sure to have comfortable walking shoes.

Weather

March, April and May are some of the most inviting months to visit San Francisco. Characteristically cloudless and mild, some of the warmest and driest days of the year occur in San Francisco's spring months, making San Francisco's springtime noticeably free from the spring showers that moisten other parts of the United States. San Francisco weather forecast can be found on the Weather Channel San Francisco page.

Tipping

Tipping is standard practice across America. In city restaurants, tipping 20% of the bill is expected; Some restaurants will include a service charge. Please check your bill when you receive it. Bartenders and transportation providers (Uber, Lyft, taxi, etc.) also expect about a 20% tip.

Money

  • Cash
The stable US dollar is the only currency generally accepted in the country.

The US dollar is divided into 100 cents (¢). Coins come in denominations of 1¢ (penny), 5¢ (nickel), 10¢ (dime), 25¢ (quarter). Bills come in $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations.

  • ATMs
ATMs are available 24/7 at most banks, and in shopping centers, airports and grocery stores. Withdrawing cash from an ATM using a credit card usually incurs a fee, but if your home bank account is affiliated with one of the main worldwide ATM networks (Plus, Cirrus, Exchange, Accel), you can sometimes avoid the fee by using your bank card.

Check with your bank or credit card company for exact information about using its cards in stateside ATMs. If you will be relying on ATMs (not a bad strategy), bring more than one card and carry them separately.

  • Taxes
Sales tax varies by state and county; sales tax in California ranges from 7.25% to 10%. To find out sales tax rate for a specific city or county in California, please visit the California State Board of Equalization website on sales tax rate.

Electricity

The U.S. operates on a 110-volt system and uses a plug with two flat parallel prongs. Most newer U.S. electrical outlets will have a third, round, ground hole. A two-prong plug will still work in a three-hole outlet.

Most computers, cell phone chargers, PDAs and digital cameras will probably not need a voltage converter — many newer devices are built to work on dual voltage. Look on the label for something along the lines of “Input: 100-240V.” If it is there, you will not need the voltage converter, just the plug adaptor if the plug of your electronic is different from the shape above-mentioned.

Getting to Campus

SFSU is easily accessible by public transportation. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) connects with the Muni M line light rail train and the bus system. Participants are encouraged to select accommodations near either of these transportation networks.

Google Maps is recommended to help participants select their accommodations.
