Why did you choose to attend the SF State Post-Bac program?
The interview felt welcoming, and I enjoyed the camaraderie with other interviewees. I ultimately chose SF State because I wanted an environment where I could work with people who genuinely cared about my success and the success of their students. From the start of the interview, I knew I wanted to go there. Plus, what an awesome city to live in.
What is/was your favorite spot on the SF State campus, and why?
In the quad on the grass on a sunny day, with a bánh mì sandwich from City Café. (I hope they're still open.)
Which SF State Post-Bac class was your favorite and why?
This is tough. Physics in Medicine, Biophysics and Oncology were my favorites because they connected a lot of dots for me between basic sciences and how the universe works. The professors were my favorite, too, because they were captivating and made me think about big-picture things, but these classes all left a lasting impression on me in how I think about life.
What is/was your favorite thing to do in SF?
You can't do any better than Mission Dolores Park on a sunny Saturday.
Tell us something you learned as an SF State Post-Bac that is important to you.
I learned that life happens and that it is okay to take a step back and re-orient yourself. I learned that at every step of the way that life would throw an obstacle in front of me, the point was not to move the obstacle but rather what I learned while moving it. What I once thought were setbacks actually toughened me. They humbled me and shaped how I think about people from all walks of life throughout the world. During applications, I thought that getting into medical school was of utmost importance, but in the grand scheme of things, I realize now that there is so much more to life that matters. This is not to say that anyone should apply to medical school haphazardly, but rather take the time to appreciate today, appreciate where you are, and appreciate the opportunity in front of you.
What advice would you give to incoming post-bac students?
As cliché as it is, I can't advise enough to trust the process, take it one step at a time, and know that failure is a part of success. Don't worry about what people next to you are doing, just keep your eyes forward and focus on what it is in life that YOU want. Ask questions, enjoy your journey, and most of all be kind to yourself.
What resources have you used while a post-bac to help you reach your goals?
The AAMC bundle pack is absolute gold.
Did you make meaningful friendships in the program?
Absolutely, I met some of my best friends at the SF State program. Six years later, I still talk to them all the time like they are family.
