Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Scholarships

The Dr. Luna Abdallah Memorial Scholarship Fund awards $3,500 each to four students who demonstrate financial need and dedication to pursuing a career in the health professions. The scholarships honor the deep and long-lasting impact that Dr. Luna Abdallah had on students and colleagues in the Pre-Health Professions Post-Bac Certificate Program. The first 2024 scholarship fund has been the result of a contribution from students, staff, colleagues, friends, and family members following the passing of Dr. Luna Abdallah.

Dr. Abdallah earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France. She worked as a research associate at the University of California, San Francisco and taught at the University of San Francisco prior to starting at San Francisco State University. Before her passing, she had taken on the lead role at the Post-Bac Program after serving for several years as Program Co-Director and instructor within the College of Science & Engineering. Dr. Abdallah’s passion for public education and social justice were the main drivers throughout her personal and professional life. Her family has chosen to honor her memory by setting up this fund to support scholarships for highly motivated and deserving students in the Post-Bac Program at SF State. 

1. Applicants must be enrolled in at least six units of coursework in the Pre-Health Professions Post-Bac Certificate Program.
2. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 in the SF State Post-Bac Program.
3. The awardee must use the award for academic expenses associated with attending SF State.

1. Applicants must submit a 500-word written statement describing their financial need, use of funds to complete the program and/or apply to health professions graduate school and past contributions in a clinical or community setting.
2. Applicants must arrange for one SF State faculty member to submit a letter of support.
3. Applicants must submit a copy of their (unofficial) current SF State transcript.

The Dr. Michael Green and Ann Sartori Scholarship awards a $3,000 scholarship to a student who demonstrates financial need and dedication to pursuing a career in the health professions.

The scholarship honors the memory and impact Dr. Michael Green has had on students and colleagues by establishing an ongoing fund to help highly motivated and deserving students in the Pre-Health Professions Certificate Program.

Dr. Michael Green

Michael Green grew up in the Bronx, New York and attended the Bronx High School of Science (1964). He earned a bachelor's degree at City College of New York (1968) and a Ph.D. in molecular biology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1972).

For 39 years, he was a professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at St. Louis University Medical School. In 2014, he retired and moved to San Francisco where his two children and two grandchildren live. During his retirement, he volunteered at the California Academy of Sciences and taught Molecular Pathophysiology and Immunology courses (fall 2015 - fall 2017) in our Post-Bac Program at San Francisco State University.

While he mentored hundreds of medical and graduate students during his long career, he often mentioned his time at San Francisco State University as one of his favorite teaching experiences.

Ann Sartori

Ann Sartori grew up in Plymouth, Wisconsin. After spending six years in a convent studying to be a nun, she left religious life because she wanted to learn more about women’s rights and the social justice movements of the 1960s.

She met Michael Green in 1968 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and they married the next year. They moved to St. Louis, Mo. in 1975 where they raised two children, Josh and Sarah. Ann was a Montessori-certified pre-school teacher for many years. In 1986, she graduated from St. Louis University Law School and was admitted to the Missouri Bar Association.

Today, she lives in San Francisco and enjoys spending time with her two grandchildren.
